Secondary Students (Grades 6-12) Shift to Virtual/Distance Learning Wednesday Nov 18-20
Secondary Students (Grades 6-12) Shift to Virtual/Distance Learning Wednesday Nov 18-20

With a rising number of Idabel Public School’s secondary staff members and students in isolation or quarantine due to COVID-19, Idabel Public Schools will transition all secondary students (grades 6-12) to distance learning beginning on Wednesday, November 18. Those students – at Idabel Middle School,  and Idabel High School – will resume in-person learning on Monday, November 30 after the Thanksgiving break.

In-person learning will continue for students in grades PreK-5. Both Primary and Central Elementary sites will remain open.

The decision to only transition secondary students into distance learning is due primarily to a lack of adequate staffing. As more employees have been placed in isolation or quarantine, it has become difficult to find enough substitute teachers or other personnel to cover classrooms. Without proper staffing, it is becoming increasingly difficult for IPS to maintain an optimal learning environment. The move to distance learning for this period will provide more opportunity for staff members to recover and return to provide effective relief and support.

Athletics and activities will continue during distance learning. All safety protocols for games, practices, and events will remain in place. The expectation for students, staff, coaches, and parents to adhere to these guidelines will not change.

Free meals will continue to be provided for all students in grades 6-12 and any child under 18 years old. “Grab and Go” Meals are available Monday-Friday from 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. on the west side of Central Elementary located 206 SE Avenue F in Idabel.

According to their IEPs, some special education students in grades 6-12 may still attend school in-person during this time.  Please check with your special education teacher.

Please continue to monitor your students for symptoms of COVID-19. If your student tests positive, displays symptoms, or has been in close contact with an individual who tested positive, please notify the secretary of your student’s school site. You play a part in helping reduce the spread of the virus. Please wear a mask, maintain social distancing, and wash your hands frequently throughout the day. You can help our district increase the chances of returning to school, and staying in school, as long as possible.

Thank you for your flexibility and understanding as Idabel Public Schools continues to make data-driven decisions to prioritize the safety and success of our students and staff members.  It is our goal to be in-person in a safe and healthy environment. The health and safety of our Warrior students and staff is extremely important to us. Please help us return to in-person instruction after the holiday break by following the CDC recommended mitigation strategies of wearing a mask, staying 6 feet a part and washing your hands frequently.
